Junk Removal in Hampstead, NC: What’s Different Up Here

Hampstead isn’t a town. It’s an unincorporated community in Pender County, which sounds like a technicality until you need something bulky taken away — because there’s no town hall, no municipal crew, and no curbside bulk pickup to call. What you get instead is a county system with limits on what it takes and a requirement that you haul it there yourself.

Add larger lots, long driveways, sheds and outbuildings that mainland-city properties don’t have, and a lot of retirees downsizing out of bigger houses, and the work up here looks different from what we do in Wilmington. Here’s how it actually goes.

What It Costs

Pricing works the same as everywhere we go: by the space your items take up in the trailer, not by weight. Our trailers are 11ft long, 8ft wide and 5ft tall.

Hampstead jobs tend to run larger than city ones. A garage on a quarter-acre lot in Wilmington fills a half load; a garage plus a shed plus what’s behind the shed on two acres in Hampstead is usually a full one, sometimes more. That works in your favour on price per item — a single full load costs less than three separate call-outs.

Send photos of everything, including what’s outside and round the back. The commonest surprise on a Hampstead job is the pile nobody mentioned because they’d stopped noticing it.

Pender County Doesn’t Collect Bulk Items

This is the thing most people moving here from a city discover the hard way.

Wilmington residents get bulky item collection from the city by appointment. Hampstead has no municipality, so there’s no equivalent. Pender County runs convenience and solid waste sites where residents can drop off waste, but you have to get it there yourself, there are limits on what’s accepted and how much, and a mattress or a hot tub isn’t going in the back of a sedan.

So the practical options are: borrow or rent a truck and make several trips, rent a dumpster and give up the driveway for a fortnight, or have a crew come and take it in one visit. For a one-time clearout the third is usually the cheapest once you count fuel, rental and your own Saturday.

Sheds, Barns and Outbuildings

Acreage means outbuildings, and outbuildings accumulate. Sheds full of tools and paint tins. Pole barns with thirty years of stored furniture. Detached workshops. Chicken coops and runs that stopped being used years ago.

We clear these out routinely, and we can dismantle and haul the structure itself when it’s past saving — rotted wooden sheds, collapsed carports, rusted metal frames, old fencing and gates. Structures are quoted separately from contents, because taking a shed apart is labour rather than volume.

What we can’t take out of a shed is the hazardous material that tends to be in it. More on that below, but paint tins are the classic — nearly every shed we open has a stack of them.

Downsizing and Estate Cleanouts

Hampstead has drawn a lot of retirees, particularly into the golf and waterway communities, and a large share of our work here is people moving out of houses they’ve been in for decades.

These jobs need a different pace than a rental turnover. There’s sorting to do, family members who want to look through things first, and often a house being prepared for sale on a deadline. We’ll work in stages if that helps — clear the garage and outbuildings first so there’s somewhere to stage, then the house.

Anything usable gets set aside for donation rather than tipped, and we’ll tell you honestly if something looks worth selling before we take it. Nobody wants to find out later that the thing in the corner had value.

Boats, Trailers and Waterway Gear

Being on the Intracoastal Waterway brings a category of junk that inland Pender County doesn’t generate: small boats past repair, rusted boat trailers, jet skis, dock sections, broken davits, crab pots and marine hardware.

We handle most of it. Fibreglass hulls take up a lot of trailer space for their weight, so those are quoted on sight or from photos rather than by rule of thumb. Metal trailers and hardware go to scrap.

What we can’t take is marine fuel, bottom paint or lead-acid marine batteries — those are hazardous and need proper disposal. Drain and remove those before we arrive and the rest is straightforward.

Storm and Tree Debris

Pender County takes hurricanes as hard as the coast does, and inland the damage is trees rather than surge. Pines come down across driveways and outbuildings, limbs pile up, fencing goes, and there’s often flooding away from the water that catches people out.

We clear cut limbs, brush, fence panels, shingles, ruined outbuilding contents and water-damaged furnishings. Note that we haul debris rather than fell trees — if something still needs cutting down or sectioning, get an arborist in first and we’ll take away what they leave.

After a named storm we book several days out. Call early rather than waiting to see what the insurer says.

Long Driveways, Private Roads and HOAs

Access up here is the opposite problem to the beach. There’s usually plenty of room to park — the question is whether we can get a truck and trailer down to where the junk actually is.

Long gravel or sand drives are fine in normal conditions but soften after heavy rain. Private roads sometimes have weight limits or a shared-maintenance agreement worth checking. Gated golf communities need us on the visitor list, and some HOAs restrict contractor hours or where a trailer can stand.

What We Take, and What We Can’t

Common Hampstead jobs: furniture and mattresses, appliances, shed and garage contents, outbuilding demolition debris, fencing, decking, hot tubs, above-ground pools, playsets, boats and trailers, yard and storm debris, and full house and estate cleanouts.

We can’t take hazardous material: paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides and herbicides, pool chemicals, asbestos, propane tanks, marine fuel or medical waste. Pender County provides for household hazardous waste disposal — check their current arrangements before you load anything into a car. On rural properties, buried or partially buried debris and anything involving a septic system is also outside what we do.
