We’re the Willis family. Adrian Willis founded The Dumpo and runs it alongside his son Bryce, a veteran, out of Putnam Drive in Wilmington, North Carolina. Family operated, and small enough that the person who quotes your job is usually the person who turns up to do it. That last part matters more than it sounds. Most junk removal in this country is franchised — a national brand, a call centre, a crew you’ve never spoken to. We’re not that. How We Got Started

We’ve been in Wilmington a long time. Long enough to have watched the place change, to know which streets flood, and to have run a few businesses here before this one — handyman work and remodelling among them. That background matters more than it might sound, because it’s where the practical side of this came from: knowing how a house is put together, how to get something heavy out of a space it was never meant to leave, and what’s actually worth saving. The bigger part of the story is the storms. Over the years we’ve taken a lot of hurricane calls. Damage assessment, cleanup, and then the long stretch of rebuilding afterwards — the part that doesn’t make the news, when a family is living in two rooms and everything ruined has to come out before anything new can go in. We’ve done that work across this county more times than we’d have chosen to. You learn things doing it. You learn that clearing a property is the first job, not an afterthought, and that nothing else starts until it’s done. You learn what a soaked ground floor looks like a week later, and why speed matters. And you end up with the trailers and the equipment, because storm work demands them. The Dumpo is a straightforward extension of all that. Same family, same trucks, same part of the coast — just doing the clearing part on its own, for people who need it on an ordinary Tuesday rather than after a hurricane.

Bryce is a veteran, and plenty of businesses put a flag on the van and leave it at that. Here’s what it actually translates to on a job. We turn up when we said we would, and if we’re running late you get a phone call rather than a shrug. The quote we give you is the number you pay — no discovering a disposal surcharge at the end. We do what we said we’d do to the standard we said we’d do it to, and we clean up after ourselves. None of that is remarkable. It’s just how the work should be done, and it’s the reason most of our jobs come from people who used us before or were told about us by someone who did.

Family businesses get sentimental about this, so we’ll keep it short: it means accountability. There’s no regional manager to blame and no head office to escalate to. If something goes wrong on your job, you’re dealing directly with the people whose name is on it. It also means we’re picky about the work. We’d rather turn down a job we can’t do properly than take it and disappoint you — which is why we’ll tell you when a piece of furniture is worth selling rather than scrapping, or when you actually need a dumpster rather than us.

We work out of hydraulic dump trailers rather than box trucks, which means heavy items go in at deck height instead of being lifted to a truck bed. It’s faster, it’s easier on the crew, and it keeps the labour cost in your quote down on exactly the jobs where labour usually spikes.

Where Your Things Actually Go

“Eco-friendly” gets said a lot in this industry and usually means nothing. Here’s the specific version. We sort every load rather than tipping it. Usable furniture, appliances, clothing and building materials go to local donation partners. Metal, cardboard and electronics go to recyclers — appliances especially, since steel, copper and aluminium are all recoverable and worth money at scrap. Fridges, freezers and AC units are separated out because their refrigerant has to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit can be scrapped. Only what genuinely can’t be reused or recycled goes to the landfill. Sorting takes us longer than tipping the whole load would, and it’s the reason we say green and going greener rather than making bigger claims than we can back.

We’re based in the 28411 zip, which puts Porters Neck and Ogden on our doorstep. From there we cover Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach, Hampstead, Leland, Landfall, Figure Eight Island, Carolina Beach, Belville and Navassa — and wider across New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick, Onslow and Duplin counties.

What We’re Not

Worth being straight about, because it saves everyone a wasted phone call. We’re not a dumpster rental company. If you’re generating debris gradually over a multi-week renovation, a container on the driveway is the better answer and we’ll say so. We’re not a long-distance van line either — we’re a local hauling and moving outfit, and for a full interstate relocation you want a licensed household goods carrier. And we can’t take hazardous material: paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, asbestos, propane tanks, fuel or regulated medical waste. Those need licensed disposal, and we’d rather tell you before we come out than after.
